Join Us in the Greek isles and southern Italy
The cradles of Western Civilization
There is no place better to have an amazing adventure abroad and experience the world outside your home than the birthplace of Western Culture itself! If you're interested in history, architecture, art, culture, and adventures, our Greece & Italy: Western Civilization program is the perfect destination to put on your summer calendar. Our high school summer program in the Greek Isles and southern Italy is the educational adventure you have been looking for. There are historical and cultural treasures dating back over 3000 years just waiting for you to explore them. There are few other European destinations that can rival Greece and southern Italy for historical and cultural relevance. Come join us this summer and experience this enchanting journey for yourself!
In our Greece & Italy: Western Civilization program, students live with other World Class Programs students in shared accommodations that are within walking distance from the host city (or cities) most famous landmarks! “Homestays” are not a part of our programs because all of our trips are designed to give students a “pre-college” dorm life experience. Studying abroad with World Class Programs isn't about 'visiting' the Greek Isles or southern Italy, but living and experiencing the Mediterranean world like a real local! Accommodations are fully equipped with all living amenities, washing machines, and air conditioning. Our trained teachers and staff members are also housed close by, in a separate accommodation in the same building. If a program is large enough, it will have a dedicated World Class Programs Security Officer staying in the building as well, who will be on-call to the needs of the students 24/7.
Every student on this program will choose two classes as their academic focus while exploring the Greek islands and Italy: a major focus and a minor focus. Major classes will meet every morning, Monday through Friday, while minor classes will meet three afternoons a week: Monday, Wednesday and Friday. When students aren't in minor classes, they're participating in an afternoon activity with their fellow students.
Major Classes
Classical History & Archaeology
Introduces students to the rich and diverse history and archaeological sites throughout the mediterranean world, while utilizing various museum display practices and discussing the complicated politics of exhibiting cultures. Explores the visual arts of a wide range of peoples, cultures, styles, movements, and media, as well as the various cultural, religious, economic, and political factors related to their creation. Major works of painting, sculpture, architecture, and decorative arts from prehistory to the present will be studied with a focus on the Ancient historical period that Greece, the Greek islands, and southern Italy are all known for.
Fine Art & Drawing

This course examines the historical development, the fundamental doctrines, practices, institutions, and cultural expressions of Western religions with a focus on Judaism and Christianity. The course also addresses differences and similarities between Western religions, and the differences and similarities between Western and non-Western religions. The course introduces students to the study of the relations between religion and politics, economics, and social life.
Minor Classes
Western Philosophy
Join us as we explore the intellectual giants of the Greek golden age of philosophy, covering broad philosophical questions which have resounded throughout time, and influenced many writers and philosophers of the world up to and including our present time. Through this necessary grounding, our students will begin to explore philosophical dilemmas posed in works of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and many other later philosophers of history. The class will focus on exploring philosophical concepts outlined by the ancient Greek philosophers. These concepts include but are not limited to: Knowledge vs Belief, concepts of the Good and of universal human morality, how to define Personhood, philosophy of nature and religion, and discussions on the role of the State.
Digital Photography
Introduces and expands on the exploration of digital camera function, digital image editing software and digital printing technology. This course will emphasize student's development of individual artistic voice while engaging with technological, aesthetic, and conceptual issues in their work while abroad. Students are required to supply their own Digital SLR camera for this course.
Mediterranean Cuisine
Our instructor and students will explore and sample the wide (and delicious!) variety of foods that make up a mediterranean diet. Students will visit local Greek and Italian markets to learn how to buy fresh and cook even fresher, and will also explore the many health benefits associated with a mediterranean diet. Students will venture out into the city with their instructor to local restaurants to sample fresh and unique local foods, cooked and served by local chefs, to broaden their palate while learning about the history and culture behind the recipes.
In addition to the day to day classes, students will go on day trips around the host country to explore the differences in culture from city to city! You'll see beautiful and breathtaking landmarks all around the mediterranean and southern Italy. Day trips are some of our students' favorite activities on our program! While day trip locations vary by year, students on our programs are planned to visit Santorini, Mykonos, The Island of Crete, Positano/Amalfi Coast, and Pompeii!
